Edit Cast Episode cast overview: Jack Kelly Bart Maverick Lisa Gaye Soledad Lozaro Joe De Santis Don Roberto Lopez Ref Sanchez There is a harrowing sequence where we see American-backed death squads go In A State Of Siege (Part 2) apartments to housing projects, rounding up and executing dissidents and political militants.
Costa-Gavras is clearly with the left-wing revolutionaries, who set the plot rolling when they kidnap an American official responsible for training police in the use of torture and violence against political rivals. Abrupt cuts, jumping between scenes, but there's a certain rhythm to it, so Clean and aesthetically pleasing, S tate of Siege is as political thriller as a political thriller can get, but to pleasant surprise, without the stale concrete gray filter that we are now so accustomed to come with it.
I love the bursts of colors, however tiny they may be, and the somewhat cheerful music that accompanies it. Masterful work. For me, political films sorta have a "4-star" ceiling because their artistic merits rarely surpass their social message.
They can - this one does, in fact, very much - but the polemical nature of such films buries them under an army of nameless characters and emotions driven by things you have to pause the movie to look up.
Criterion's commitment to Costa-Gavras is much deserved: all of his films feature sequences of electric filmmaking. The opening here, with the precise whip-pans, puts the viewer in a perfectly paranoid spot. The Theodorakis score is as good as Z. The examination of torture, political pressure, American over-involvement, etc. State of Siege is a dark political thriller with the potential to be great; unfortunately, it is not great. But it has some really good things going for it. The camera movements are slick and unique, although they began to grate on me nearing the end.
It's a highly mobile style, one that can work for intense scenes but falls flat when we're just looking for a dialogue or character building moment. Being based on In A State Of Siege (Part 2) events, State of Siege strikes up an almost documentary style. It certainly offers very little in the field of character development. While that can be interpreted as a bad thing, it does work quite well in setting up the facts - not emotions -….
Though not banned in the United States, it was heavily criticized by officials ahead of its theatrical release as being a complete fabrication. Depicting the interrogation of the fictional Philip Michael Santore Yves Montanda man designed after the real life Mitrione, the…. Costa-Gavras checklist: Edge-of-your-seat political thriller? Well, let's consider Yep, the film remains timely. Next to Costa-Gavras' Z, State of Siege is an exemplar of the documentary-style political thriller popular in the late 's and early 's.
Like when I watched Costa Gavras' Z, this was really a tough watch. Perhaps it was even tougher than that one actually. Political foreign films seem to be something that I just cannot get into for whatever reason, In A State Of Siege (Part 2) just blame it in my shallow scope of personal film viewing if you wish to. Biggest problem for me is that I really don't care one way or another what the outcome of Santore's character was.
Whether that makes me an ass or not remains to be In A State Of Siege (Part 2). It sounds like this was based loosely on true events. I think maybe the film would have been better off being a real true story and digging in better to some of the….
