A perfect jewel of storytelling. General Comment this song is wonderful. Apparently the company used to advertise by posting Burma Shave signs all along the highways. General Comment you missed a line " 'how far are you going? General Comment Every time I pass through Marysville, I think of this song "Hell, marysville ain't nothin' but a wide spot in Tom Waits - Burma Shave (DVDr) road" a great Tom waits storytelling, that I think he did on VH1 storytellers, but that may be incorrect.
General Comment Saw an interview with Waits where he says that when he was a kid he saw the road signs and thought that Burma Shave was a town, hence the odd use of the name here. General Comment This is a fantastic piece of poetry on so many levels. It all starts with using Burma Shave as a symbol for the highways of America, which are symbolic of the American dream and symbolic of the mystery of life on an even deeper level.
In the end it's symbolic of death. From that lofty concept he ranges to simple and beautiful lines like "Her hair spilled out like root beer.
Definitely the best song on Americana I've ever heard though Tom has some other gems on that genre. I'll stop gushing over it now. Heathcliff Huxtable. Tired of waking up every morning, seeing your dreams dieing right in front of you. You blame it on this no horse town. You want to get out, and be anywhere but here. There's one road out of town and you want to get as far away as the road will take you. You don't care where you end up, rather take your chances, hell it couldn't be worse.

She grew up Catholic, you know, blood and liquor and guilt. She pulverises me so that I don't just write the same song over and over Tom Waits - Burma Shave (DVDr). Which is what a lot of people do, including myself. At rehearsals, Tom Waits looked like any moment he might break at the waist or his head fall off his shoulders on to the floor. I once saw a small-town idiot walking across the park, totally drunk, but he was holding an ice-cream, staggering, but also concentrating on not allowing the ice-cream to fall.
I felt there was something similar to Tom. Waits collaborated with Robert Wilson left and William S. Burroughs right on The Black Rider. The year-old Mr. A keen, sensitive and sympathetic chronicler of the adrift and downtrodden, Mr. Waits creates three-dimensional characters who, even in their confusion and despair, are capable of insight and startling points of view.
Their stories are accompanied by music that's unlike any other in pop history. I completely resonate deeply with his music, his voice and his lyrics; I buy everything he ever does.
