If one lemming jumps off a cliff all of the lemmings will jump off with it. A person that follows another person and does everything the same as the person they are following.
Rodents who will follow each other to their deaths supposedly. Slang- an insult to another person who you believe has no preferences of their own, and instead will always follow the crown. Sheeple is also a term for this type of person. Usually an object, not another person. Lemmings are small little rodents that are said to commit suicide in mass numbers. But this is actually just a rumor started after a documentary about lemmings where the director was miss iformed and thought that lemmings did commit suicide and forced hundreds of them off a cliff.
A group of small rodents, famous for mass migrations where huge numbers of them will move Like Lemmings place to place, sometimes ending in all of them drowning. In the game " Lemmings ", if you're not careful, all the lemmings will walk right off the cliff and go Splat or drown. Populations of lemmings fluctuate dramatically, from massive herds to near extinction. For years, theories on these populace peaks and Like Lemmings varied from the supernatural to the absurd.
As reported by ABC News in :. Back in the 19th century, the Naturalist Edward Nelson wrote that 'the Norton Sound Eskimo have an odd superstition that the White Lemming lives in the land beyond the stars Like Lemmings that it sometimes comes down to the earth, descending in a spiral course during snow-storms. That was before the modern meaning gained traction: That populations tumbled because packs of lemmings would occasionally run head-first off of cliffs, plunging to their self-induced death for no apparent reason.
To refer to an individual as a lemming thus became synonymous with calling them a follower of a large group--a community on an unthinking course towards mass destruction. It turns out that there is no proof that an assemblage of wild lemmings would actually drive themselves off of a cliff at all, but rather the myth was perpetuated by a Disney documentary called White Wildernessin which the filmmakers manually ran a pack of lemmings off of a cliff to make for good television.
In the 17th century, naturalists perplexed by the habit of Norway lemmings to suddenly appear in large numbers, seemingly Like Lemmings of nowhere, came to the conclusion that the animals were being spontaneously generated in the sky and then falling to earth like rain. The prosaic truth is that they migrate in herds. Some people also thought that lemmings explode if they become sufficiently angry.
This is also a myth, of course—lemmings are indeed one of the more irascible rodents, but they mostly channel their rage into fights with other lemmings. People probably came up with the notion of exploding lemmings after seeing the picked-over lemming carcasses that were left behind following a migration. Instinct, it is said, drives them to kill themselves whenever their population becomes unsustainably large, Like Lemmings.
Lemmings do not commit suicide. However, this particular myth is based on some actual lemming behaviors. Lemmings have large population booms every three or four years.
