I normally wouldn't voice an opinion about Haitink's long overlooked set of Schumann symphonies except for the word "great" applied by earlier reviewers. Haitink waited until to begin recording these works -- the Rhenish Sym.

I can see why the delay. Haitink's temperament, unlike conductors as diverse as Bernstein and Klemperer, doesn't fit Schumann's exuberant, at times blowsy, unfettered moods.

Where Bernstein's reading is thrilling to the point of being breathless, Haitink's Rhenish is poised and restrained too much of the time.

It's not tame orchestrally, however, with glorious work from the Concertgebouw horns in their all-important mottos, and glowing, smooth string playing. None of the roughness of Schumann's supposedly inferior orchestration is allowed to show, and perhaps that gives this reading a feeling of being smoothed out.

I'd say that Haitink shows more romantic sympathy than the tense Szell by Allegro Molto Vivace - Schumann* - Bernard Haitink good measure, and that two movements, the first and last, really come alive.

It's the middle movements that are faceless, however skillfully played. Far better is the filler, a Maanfred Over. The First and Second back off from seeming heroic and indebted to Beethoven, which is not right as I hear tis music.

The signature mottoes should peal out, the Scherzos should be whirlwinds, especially in the Second, and the orchestral tone should be grand. Haitink stops halfway, and so the main appeal is that of a sane, balanced reading with lustrous playing and good, solid recorded sound.

The Fourth, which is the most spontaneous-seeming, needs to unfold with a fine instinct for transitions as the tempo or mood abruptly shifts. Furtwangler was a past master at this. Haitink is also very good, and his conducting wakes up more than before; this Fourth is the best thing here. Overall, however, there's a propulsive urgency to all of Schumann's symphonic music that simply has to be there. This is the Schumann's Bicentennial year. There are many symphonic cycles to celebrate that, but Concertgebouw Orchestra seldom we can find a truly great one along the whole of the 4 symphonies.

Haitink's is one of these. Those are brilliant, solid and thrilling performances that show the mastery of maestro Haitink. Concertgebouw orchestra plays heavenly and sound by Philips is, one more time, a matter of admiration. Among cycles in modern and digital sound, this is one of the best choices.

This CD set looks to go out of print soon, so go get it. Streams Videos All Posts. Born December 16, in Bonn, Germany. Died March 26, in Vienna, Austria.

  7. The world might not seem to need another recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, but this one by the Iranian-Austrian violinist Bijan Khadem-Missagh is distinctive enough to merit a place on the shelf. Khadem-Missagh leads the string orchestra Academia Allegro Vivo, which formerly had the name, dreaded by non-German-speaking radio presenters, of the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Vienna.
